The problem In preparing plans to ensure continuity of service should working practices be disrupted by the recent threat of the H1N1 flu pandemic, the Adour-Garonne agency sought a solution to allow fast, easy access to applications for house-bound employees. The same solution, it was hoped, could also be applied more broadly to making applications accessible to technicians and engineers on site during direct intervention on resources across the region.
The agency’s IT infrastructure is based on a VMware vSphere deployment hosting most of the servers and applications. A Citrix XenApp server farm supports applications within remote desktop environment for end users on the agency’s internal network.
The Virtual Browser solution Deploying the Virtual Browser solution by commonIT in this environment allowed rapid, seamless access to the Citrix-based environment for internal and remote users. Virtual Browser includes support for the Citrix ICA protocol, allowing connection to desktops and applications virtualized in a Citrix environment. External (client) connections to the Virtual Browser server use secure, encrypted SSL tunneling. For home users, the Virtual Browser client is quick and easy to install on their PC and is all that’s necessary for secure connection to the server.
Interested in the potential benefits for remote and mobile access, the Adour-Garonne agency installed the Virtual Browser client software on fifteen ultra-portable terminal devices with WiFi, LAN and 3G+ connectivity, allowing field personnel to connect to applications while on site visits. Additionally, agency employees on operations in Japan and China now use the Virtual Browser solution for secure remote access to key business applications.
Why Virtual Browser? Reasons the Adour Garonne water agency chose the Virtual Browser solution by commonIT: - The ease of deployment of the Virtual Browser solution
- Availability of technical teams of CommonIT
